“I was under the impression that it was billed monthly not annually? How does this HostGator Pricing thing work??”

This is part of a question I received on the Tru Lift Digital YouTube Channel that was related to HostGator Pricing, and the confusion that one viewer had with it.

It inspired me to create a video on the topic to help those interested in getting their website hosting set up, but who…

  • Aren’t exactly sure how all of the pricing works
  • Are curious how to use a coupon code for HostGator when signing up,
  • Want to learn more about HostGator renewal pricing and how you can save a bit more there too, and
  • Have an interest in getting the Best Possible Deal on their new hosting plan

And wouldn’t you know it…here it is ⬇︎

Let’s get started…

Okay, so we’re going to start off on this page here…

HostGator Home Page

Coupon Code For HostGator

I’ve also got a Coupon Code for HostGator, that you might want to use to save some cash on your hosting. Coupon Code: webpresence60

Just a Heads Up…

I’m going to show you in this post, WHERE to use that Coupon Code…

But also…where it might make sense NOT to use it!

Once you arrive on that page, click either of the two links to be taken to the “Web Hosting” Section.

This is where we start. Click on web hosting.

Interested in learning more about the various Hosting Plans that HostGator offers?

Check out this other video I created titled
“Choosing A Hosting Plan And Getting Started With HostGator”

To get to the checkout page, you can click on the “buy now” button of which ever plan you are interested in.

Don’t worry, you’re not buying ANYTHING yet, just going to the Order Page, so you can see what is there.

For the purposes of this example, I’m going to show you inside the Baby Plan.

Various HostGator hosting plans and plan pricing. For example, choose HostGator's Baby Plan.

You will land on a page like the one below.

Checkout page pointing to Billing Cycle section.

I won’t go over the filling of the actual form as it is reasonably self explanatory, but the area that I wanted to focus on (for this post) is the billing cycle section – about mid way down on the right side (before scrolling).

Once you click on the drop down arrow (on the right side), that section looks like this:

HostGator pricing for various billing cycles for Baby Plan.

This is where the confusion can come in…

When the person asked the question on the Tru Lift YouTube Channel, he wanted to be able to take advantage of the SAVINGS that are available for 12 months, 24 months, and 36 months; but he didn’t want to put up much money right now.

He basically wanted to know (using 12 months in this case as an example)…

Billing cycle section highlighting 12 months.

“If I commit to 12 months, can I get the 50.21% discount (in this case), and pay $5.95 per month over the next 12 months?”

The answer to that question, is unfortunately “NO”.

Huh?

Here is the key…

Whatever “Billing Cycle Term” you commit to – in terms of TIME, is that amount that you will essentially be “pre-paying” for, when you provide your credit card, and go through the checkout.

So in the example above, $5.95 represents the 50.21% discount (from the regular price of $11.95); but all 12 months of hosting (at the rate of $5.95 per month) are due and payable upon checkout – TODAY!

In other words, if you choose this particular Term (and if that particular discount is available when you view the page), then the amount you will pay at checkout will be 12 months x $5.95/month…which equals roughly $72.00.

The same principal would hold true for 24 and 36 months…

Price for 24 month billing cycle.

24 months x $4.95/month works out to roughly $120.00 (due at checkout)

Price for 36 month billing cycle.

36 months x $3.95/month works out to roughly $144.00 (due at checkout)

** there may some some additional estimated taxes etc., which I’ll discuss in a sec.**

So you have to basically ask yourself the question…

“What works best FOR YOU right now?”

Are you low on dough (at the moment)?

Would it make more sense just to go on a month to month basis and pay $11.95?

You’re going to forego the savings that come with locking for a longer period… but the trade-off of course is that you don’t have to basically “prepay” for that amount up front.

Or…

Do you want to lock in that savings now?

Maybe you know you’re going to have your website and your hosting for a long period of time…

You’d rather get the opportunity to participate in that discount, and so you’re going to lock in for a longer period.

That’s really just a question that you have to answer for yourself.

Maybe you’re thinkin…

Perhaps this discount is going to go on for a little while, or maybe I can use Kevin’s link sometime down the road?

What I’m going to do is just lock in for a month now, or maybe a shorter period of time… and when I do have some more cash …maybe in a month or two, I’m just going to come back and try to get those discounts. Yeah…that’s it.

Sorry Dude!

Unfortunately… those crafty buggers put the kibosh on that opportunity.

Here’s a screenshot about what I mean…

Rules for using coupon codes with HostGator

That text might be a bit small. If so, here’s what it says:

Coupon codes are valid for new signups only, not valid on any pre-existing packages, products, services or renewals.

Ah man…

I know…RIGHT!

Unfortunately, they’ve kind of got that covered off there. These discounts only apply if you’re basically NEW to HostGator.

We’re going to go back to the 12 month example, but before I do…if you are interested in the shorter periods…

Potential HostGator pricing benefits available for shorter periods using coupon code.

…then hold on just a sec, because I’ll show you how you can save on those too!

Let’s keep ‘er going…

Let’s stick with the 12 month billing cycle for this example.

HostGator pricing for 12 months highlighted for example.

If I click on that…

Click on 12 month scenario.

…and scroll all the way to the bottom… we can check out the final price.

HostGator price breakdown with Addons.

What the??

What’s with all that 72 dollar stuff Kevin talked about??

Hold on there champ, let me explain.

The reason you’re seeing a total of $127.09 is… you’re getting your discount on your hosting, but what they’re doing is they’re adding on “hosting add-ons”.

Why HostGator pricing is giving a high total.

If you scroll up a bit on the page to the Add Additional Services section, you can see that HostGator pre-selected two specific Addons for you. The SiteLock Essentials Addon and the Site Backup Addon.

HostGator pre selects 2 Addons when you order your hosting.

Both of these Addons are MUCHO Importante… and a great thing to have to protect your site from Hackers and provide you with a backup, if something goes screwy with your site – for whatever reason.

I would never suggest to you to uncheck these, because I honestly think anything that keeps you safer (ie. your website safer) is A GOOD THING.

However…

I personally don’t get these two addons…because I already use a free pluggin in WordPress that backs up my website stuff automatically (I just have to remember to manually download the file every once and a while to backup my backup).

(If you want to find out what plugin I use to do that and how you can set that up, checkout this video here).

And, I also utilize a free service from CloudFlare (at least it was free when I first got it), that keeps those hackers from scratching at my website’s door.

For the record…I am NOT saying to uncheck the Addons

Goodness gracious, I don’t want the responsibility hanging over me that I suggested something, and you followed my advice, and then you got bit in the butt – for some reason.

But…

For the purpose of this post (if nothing else), I’m going to uncheck those Addons, just to show you what happens to the price after you do so.

We cool?

If I was to scroll down and check out the price now…

Your price without addons added.

After estimated tax, you’d be sitting at $76.11.

Let’s talk COUPON CODES

If you were to scroll up just above “Review Order Details”, you’d see the section “Enter a Coupon Code”

Pre-populated HostGator coupon code.

Now, if you came through my link (or perhaps even if you didn’t), you would see a pre-populated coupon code here of SHARED3660.

HostGator has different discounts throughout the year, so that COUPON CODE (SHARED3660) might not be the one that is pre-populated there. But if you came through my link, then it is highly likely that that is what you will see.

At the beginning of this post I gave you a COUPON CODE for HostGator: webpresence60.

If I was to plug that into the coupon code box and hit Validate…

Entering in the webpresence60 coupon code for HostGator and then validating.

You would find that your final price actually went UP from $76.11 to $91.72. CRAP!

Price of hosting with webpresence60 coupon code.

So in the case where the coupon code is pre-populated with SHARED3660, you are better off to use that coupon code IF…you are looking to purchase your hosting for either 12 months, 24 months or 36 months.

Then why would I even show you webpresence60?

Because…depending on whether or not you came through my link, or depending on the time of year and the Coupon Code that HostGator is using or allowing, webpresence60 may be the best coupon code to use.

I’ll show you a pricing chart comparison with the two coupon codes to help illustrate this point in just a minute.

Let’s scroll up to the top (with the webpresence60 coupon code still activated), to see what we are looking at (for price) with various terms.

If you click the drop down, you can see

Billing cycle highlighting 12 months with webpresence60 coupon code for HostGator

The webpresence60 coupon code will get you a discount of

  • 20% off for a Term of 1 month, 3 months, or 6 months
  • 40% off on a 12 month Term
  • 50% off for a 24 month Term, and
  • 60% off for a 24 month Term

To contrast this with the SHARED3660 coupon code that I showed you earlier, let’s break out a side by side pricing chart:

HostGator pricing chart using 2 different coupon codes

So what does this tell you?…

Well…

IF…You are looking at locking down a longer Term of 12 months, 24 months or 36 months…and

IF…the coupon code of SHARED3660 is pre-populated when you come to the site via my link, or perhaps if it is just pre-populated because of the time of year…

You would be better off NOT using the webpresence60 coupon code and sticking with the SHARED3660 (if available).

HostGator pricing chart using different coupon codes: when to used Shared3660.

(if that coupon code is not pre-populated because you didn’t come through my link, then you may want to just try clicking on my link). Just sayin’:-)

However…

IF, you are interested in committing to a shorter period of time; namely 1 month, 3 months, or 6 months, then the webpresence60 coupon code would be the way to go to get the best possible price on your hosting.

Bottom Line: Choose the best HostGator coupon code for the term that you are interested in, that works best for you and your situation.

How HostGator Renewal Pricing Works

I just want to make you aware of the fact that whatever term you end up deciding on, at the end of that term, your account will automatically be renewed (credit card on file will be charged) for the SAME TERM that you originally signed up for.

So for example, if you signed up for 12 months… at the end of 12 months, it’s going to automatically renew you for 12 months.

If you sign up for 24 months, at the end of 24 months, it’s going to do the same thing… it’s going to automatically renew you for a 24-month period.

And 36 months (of course ) it’s going to renew you for 36.

Now you don’t have to stay with that, if you don’t want to.

You can drop down to “month to month”…

So say for example, you’re on a 12 month plan… you’ve gone your 12 months, and you don’t want to sign up for another 12 months (or basically pre-pay for the next 12 months)…you want to drop down to month to month.

You just have to let HostGator know that ahead of time. And from personal experience, I would just say, the easiest way to do that, is probably give them at least 30 days notice.

It’s just going to make the transition a lot smoother in your billing.

How to save even a little more on your renewal:

You may have noticed, if you click on the 12 month period in the Billing Cycle section (whether you are using the SHARED3660 coupon code or the webpresence60 coupon code)…

How HostGator renewal pricing works for 12 months.

…your plan will renew at the end of those 12 months (automatically) at the regular price of $11.95/month (all payable upfront for that 12 month term – at the time of renewal).

However, if you were to sign up for the 24 month plan, at the end of that 24 months, you would automatically be renewed for an amount based on $10.95/month (all payable upfront for that 24 month period – at the time of renewal). So you were able to save a little bit off your HostGator renewal amount.

How HostGator renewal pricing works for 24 months.

You get even a little bit more savings if you signed up for the 36 month plan; as at the end of that 36 month period, you would automatically be renewed for a term based on $9.95 per month (all payable upfront for that next 36 month term). A savings of $2/month x 36 months.

How HostGator renewal pricing works for 36 months.

It probably goes without saving though, that IF…at the end of your 24 month or 36 month term, if you were to drop down to month to month, for example, you would be back up to the regular price of $11.95/ month.

Unsure of what term or what plan to choose?

Don’t stress about it too much…HostGator also has a 45 Day money back guarantee, to give you some comfort that you are not nailed down if you change your mind about that within the first 45 days after paying for your hosting.

45 day money back guarantee.

Once you have:

  • Chosen you plan (Hatchling, Baby, Business)
  • Chosen your hosting term (1 mo, 3 mo, 6 mo, 12 mo, 24 mo, 36 mo)
  • Entered your billing info
  • Chosen your additional services (Addons)
  • And tested out which coupon code works best for you…

Then simply have a read of the

  • Terms of Service
  • Cancellation Policy and
  • Privacy Policy

SUMMARY

Hopefully after reading this post you have a clearer understanding of how HostGator Pricing works.

We discussed that the amount you commit to TODAY in terms of TIME, is the amount that you pre-pay for upfront when you check out (not the monthly amounts shown that the payment made today is based on).

I also shared with you two coupon codes for HostGator (webpresence60 and SHARED3660 – the second of which HostGator may have pre-populated in the coupon section).

For shorter periods of time (1 month, 3 months and 6 months) webpresence60 might be the best to use to save you some money on your hosting (again it depends on the amount of discount that comes pre-populated when you land on the page).

For longer periods (12 months, 24 months, and 36 months) if HostGator has pre-populated SHARED3660 in your coupon code area, then that will likely give you the best price on your Hosting.

Bottom Line: Try entering in my coupon code (webpresence60) and see if it lowers your price for the plan and term that you have selected. And if not, enter in the original coupon code (if there was one) and hit validate, to get back the pricing associated with that.

I showed you how the HostGator Renewal Pricing works, and shared some possible additional savings you can receive in your renewal when you sign up for 24 or 36 months.

OK, that’s all I’ve got kids.

Whatever choice you make, I hope I’ve given you some information that you can use to get going on getting your hosting, setting up your website, and getting your message out to the world!

Thanks for checking this post out.

Take care,

Kevin
